Northern Biodiesel has sealed the deal on a former 84 Lumber warehouse on Route 104 in Ontario, Wayne County, and is moving ahead with the launch of its biodiesel plant.
The startup company plans to produce biodiesel fuel for clients including fleets and school buses.
The 20,000-plus-square-foot facility will house the biodiesel plant, along with a Harbec Plastics warehouse expansion and a third company, Sustainable Energy Development.
The building stands on 6 acres of county-owned land and is part of the Wayne Industrial Sustainability Park, where companies are focused on alternative energy.
Biodiesel fuel is typically made from vegetable oils or animal fat and is less polluting than petroleum-based diesel.
Bob Bechtold and Jason Masters, co-founders of Northern Biodiesel, said they expect the plant will be running in six months.
In the first year of operation, the plant will produce 1 million to 2 million gallons, eventually growing to 7 million to 8 million gallons. It is being funded by its founders and banks. Bechtold declined to discuss the specific amount invested.
Northern Biodiesel will start out with three or four employees and grow to 10 to 15 employees over the next two years, said Bechtold, who also is president of Harbec Plastics Inc., a wind-powered factory located next to Northern Biodiesel's facility.
Energy generated for the plastics plant also can be used at Northern Biodiesel.
The county has high hopes for the company and the industrial park.
"We've been working on the park for a number of years," said Peg Churchill, director of the Wayne County Industrial Development Agency.
Churchill said the company comes with seasoned players.
"Bechtold is the guru for renewable energy and has been a leading force in searching for a site using renewable energy," Churchill said.
