Loan approved for biodiesel plant upgrade in Salem

http://www.statesmanjournal.comA biodiesel plant in South Salem has received a $6 million state loan to upgrade its production facility, said officials with the Oregon Department of Energy.
Fuel production at the plant would go from 1 million gallons per year to 5 million gallons per year under a plan proposed by the plant's operators, state officials said.
The plant at 4725 Turner Road SE in Salem, could be producing the added capacity by early next year, state officials said.
The plant, opened in 2005 and is backed by a joint venture, which includes Oregon-based SeQuential Biofuels, Hawaii-based Pacific Biodiesel Inc., and several other investors.
John Miller, a Salem businessman who is a minority investor in the project, said it was premature to discuss details of the project. The plant upgrade still is in the midst of getting permits and lining-up private financing, he said.
Biodiesel is a blend of diesel and processed vegetable oil that can power diesel engines. It burns cleaner than petroleum diesel alone.
The plant on Turner Road, which originally was going to be a temporary location, uses waste cooking oil and canola oil for its feedstock.
The state's energy loan program provides loans to projects that use alternative fuels and produce energy from renewable sources.
