uses soybean oil first in area Biodiesel company buys land in Orange FUELING AN INDUSTRY

Plans for what would be the Fredericksburg area's first biodiesel production plant are moving forward.
American Biodiesel Corp. this week completed its purchase of 5 acres in Orange County's Thomas E. Lee Industrial Park.
Julie Jordan, the county's director of economic development, said interest in biodiesel--a renewable and more environmentally friendly fuel--is growing.
"There's a decent amount of activity in the state in general," she said, noting that the county has had discussions with others in the industry.
There are four companies now located in the industrial park off U.S. 15 between Gordonsville and the town of Orange.
American Biodiesel announced last fall that it would build its first production plant in the rural county. Company President S. Scott Johnson said at the time that it could be in production by the first quarter of this year.
He said Tuesday that it took longer than anticipated to line up financing for the project and that production now could begin as early as December.
American Biodiesel plans to use soybean oil, and possibly commercially grown algae, as the organic base for its fuel. Mixed with traditional petroleum diesel, it can power cars and trucks, buses, trains, farm and construction equipment.
It hopes to ramp up to yearly production of 3 million gallons and eventually producing 6 million gallons.
"Initially that would be about 14,000 gallons a day," said Johnson, 45, a builder who grew up in Northern Virginia and now lives in Manassas. He and his wife, Oltita Johnson, operate S. Johnson Enterprises Inc., and Johnson Homes.
He got interested in biodiesel several years ago after a relative, a diesel mechanic, told him about the fuel and its applications.
"I thought it was a great idea and I started researching it on a larger scale," he said. He attended an industry conference in California, visited some producers in the United States and decided that a plant would be feasible here.
"Everyone thought I was crazy, but the timing was pretty good," he said. He's started another company, Restaurant Recyclers Inc., which would recycle used cooking oils.
Biofuels have been a hot topic in recent years as the nation attempts to wean itself from its dependence on polluting, mostly foreign produced petroleum-based fuel.
Biodiesel is processed from vegetable oils and animal fats and, importantly, can be used in unmodified diesel engines. And it burns much cleaner than petroleum-based diesel, with about 60 percent less carbon dioxide emissions.
American Biodiesel intends to use a waterless, continuous-flow system developed in Germany, to make the fuel, Johnson said. He estimated the company will be spending about $4 million on the project.
