Sunnyvale-based Silicon Valley Biodiesel Inc. plans to spend about $1.5 million to build a pilot biodiesel plant at Sanger's Kings River Technology Park, Walt Bacharowski, company president, said. The plant will employ about 15 people to convert used restaurant grease and other vegetable and animal fats into about 1.2 million gallons per year of biodiesel, a cleaner-burning fuel that's blended with regular diesel or sold pure, Bacharowski said. "Originally, we were planning to locate in the San Jose area," said Bacharowski, an electrical engineer who made his money in the semiconductor industry. Fuel production at the plant would go from 1 million gallons per year to 5 million gallons per year under a plan proposed by the plant's operators, state officials said. The plant at 4725 Turner Road SE in Salem, could be producing the added capacity by early next year, state officials said. The plant, opened in 2005 and is backed by a joint venture, which includes Oregon-based SeQuential Biofuels, Hawaii-based Pacific Biodiesel Inc., and several other investors. Tyson, ConocoPhillips link up for biodiesel Категория: english http://news.com.com Tyson Foods, one of the largest meat processors in the United States, is working with oil giant ConocoPhillips to produce and start selling biodiesel made from chicken, pork and poultry fat. The two companies have been running processing trials in Tyson's Ireland facility. Biodiesel can be run in most diesel engines but burns cleaner than regular diesel fuel. It emits less nitrous oxide and sulfur compounds, depending on how it is processed. It is also more carbon-neutral, advocates say, because the carbon dioxide emitted by tailpipes burning biodiesel is captured from green plants. (Grass takes in carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, cows eat the grass, and then the cow fat gets turned into gas, which releases the carbon dioxide). Diesel fuel made from fossil deposits releases carbon dioxide that was captured below the surface of the earth. Tyson formed a renewable-energy division last year. The companies will start a joint development study in 2007 and begin producing palm oil-based biodiesel in 2009 for test bases in Malaysia, the Yomiuri Shimbun evening edition reported. The Rio de Janeiro-based company plans to sell 31.6 million new voting shares for 17 reais to 22 reais each, the company said in a statement in Valor Economico newspaper today.
